What will the Part B late enrollment penalty cost you?
The Part B penalty is 10% of the standard premium for every full 12-month period you were eligible but didn’t enroll — and it’s added to your premium for life. See what it would cost in your situation.
Enter the months you delayed Part B to see your estimated penalty.
Estimates use plan year 2025 values. The penalty formula is 10% of the standard Part B premium × each full 12-month period you were eligible without enrolling. The penalty is added to your Part B premium for life. If you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, the penalty may not apply — a licensed agent can help you check.
When the penalty does NOT apply
You generally avoid the Part B penalty if any of these applied during the months you weren’t enrolled:
- You had employer group health coverage based on current (not retiree) employment
- You had coverage through TRICARE or the VA that meets specific criteria
- You were eligible for a Special Enrollment Period
- You qualified for Medicaid or certain other programs
The calculator assumes you had no qualifying coverage during the delayed months. If your situation includes any of the above, your actual penalty may be lower — a licensed El-Mag agent can walk through the specifics.
