International
International health and travel coverage.
If you spend significant time outside the United States — for work, retirement, family, or extended travel — your domestic health insurance probably doesn’t follow you. International health insurance does.
Who international coverage is for
- Long-term travelers — sabbaticals, extended trips, “digital nomads”
- Expats — Americans living abroad full-time
- Snowbirds and dual residents — people splitting time between the U.S. and another country
- Foreign nationals visiting or studying in the U.S.
- Frequent international business travelers
Travel medical vs. expat health insurance
The two main categories of international coverage solve different problems:
- Travel medical insurance is short-term — typically days to a few months. It covers emergency care while you’re away from your home country. It doesn’t cover routine care, pre-existing conditions in most cases, or care once you’ve returned home.
- International expat health insurance is long-term. It works more like a comprehensive major medical plan — preventive care, primary care, hospitalization, prescriptions — but the network is global.
Medical evacuation coverage
Most international policies include or offer emergency medical evacuation coverage. If you’re seriously injured or ill in a place that can’t provide adequate care, evacuation coverage transports you to the nearest facility that can — or back to your home country, depending on the policy. Out-of-pocket, a single medical evacuation can cost between $50,000 and $250,000.
How we help
International health insurance is one of the most under-discussed product lines because most U.S. agencies don’t carry it. We do. A licensed El-Mag agent will match the policy term and benefits to how and where you actually travel or live.
